Squirrel Causes Explosion In Port Canaveral

Electricity Interrupted Briefly

A squirrel sparked an explosion Wednesday morning at a Florida Power and Light substation on the coast.

The Port Canaveral fire chief heard a loud explosion about a block away and saw flames and smoke. He sent fire engines to the scene, but firefighters had to stand out of the way because of the dangerous situation.

Electricity in the area was interrupted. When they were able to investigate, firefighters found that a squirrel short-circuited two power lines, and the electricity flowing through the squirrel caused the explosion.

There was no serious damage to the equipment.
